White Cane Week: Raising Awareness of Vision Loss

White Cane Week | February 2–8

White Cane Week is an opportunity to raise awareness about vision loss and to celebrate the independence, confidence, and skills of people who are blind or partially sighted.

The white cane is more than a mobility aid – it is a symbol of independence and a reminder of the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and understanding in our community.

At CCB Peterborough, we support individuals with vision loss through rehabilitation services, assistive technology,

orientation and mobility training, and peer support. During White Cane Week, we encourage everyone to learn more about the experiences of people with vision loss and how small actions can make a big difference.

How you can help:

  • Be mindful of white cane users in public spaces and crossings

  • Offer assistance respectfully – always ask first

  • Support accessible design in your workplace and community

  • Share information about White Cane Week to help spread awareness

Together, we can help create a more inclusive Peterborough for people of all abilities.

We strive to provide our members with regular social outings. Whether it’s visiting the museum, attending our monthly meetings, participating in community workshops, or exploring something at the theatre, we want to keep our interested members engaged. A “part of”, is always better than “apart from”. Become a member to stay informed of our upcoming events.

Listening For spring

A Fundraiser in Support of the Canadian Council of the Blind Peterborough Chapter

We are over the moon happy with how our “Listening for Spring” fundraising event turned out on May 2nd, 2025.

Thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, prize donors, and everyone who bought tickets and attended. Your generous support enables us to provide better vision care to

 those who need it most.

Special thanks to Ian Crawford, Ron Phillips, and Carling Stephen for entertaining us for the evening and to the staff and residents at Canterbury Gardens for the warm hospitality.
