Identification (ID) canes are thin and straight canes. They are primarily white, but it can be customized, depending on personal preference. Usually, ID canes are held in front of the body to alert others to your sight loss. ID canes can be used by people who can navigate without a cane but wish to supplement or confirm visual information, such as doorways and stairs. It lets others know that a person has sight loss.
Generally extend from the floor to the user’s waist, providing information about the surroundings around a step ahead. It can be used to scan for curbs and steps. The guide can also be used diagonally across the body for protection, warning the user of obstacles immediately ahead. They, too, can be folded up when not in use.
Support canes are designed to offer physical support and stability, like a walker. The white colour makes others aware that it is being used by someone who is living with sight loss.
